Run a CurseForge modpack and add mods on top

Updated 31 October 2026 · 3 minute read · Minecraft Java modpack servers · By Exclsv Support

Pick a modpack on the Mods page and HQ installs the server side for you. You can then add more mods on top of the pack.

Install a modpack

  1. In HQ, open your server, then Mods.
  2. Search for the pack and choose it. Before anything goes in, HQ says how much disk and memory the pack needs and what your plan has.
  3. If it needs more, Change plan picks the smallest size with both. Confirm, and HQ takes a backup, then installs the pack.

Players need the same pack

Every player installs the same pack, at the same version, in the CurseForge app. Then they join with the address from the Join page.

Add mods on top

  • On a modpack server the Mods page says Add mods to and the pack’s name. Search and install mods as usual.
  • HQ checks each one against the pack’s loader and Minecraft version, skips libraries the pack already has, and tells you when the pack may already include the mod.
  • Your extra mods are listed apart, under Added on top of the pack, and are kept when the pack updates.

Updating the pack

A pack update puts the pack’s own config files back, as its author intends. HQ warns you first if you edited them, and offers an export.

If it doesn’t work

The server runs out of memory

Big packs need more memory than the player count suggests. All the Mods packs suit 12 GB and up.

A mod needs another mod

The Server Doctor names the missing mod. Install it from the Mods page.
