Reserved memory, explained

When you buy a 16 GB server, 16 GB of the machine’s 128 GB is set aside for it. Other servers can’t borrow it, even while yours is empty at 4am, so your world loads the same on a busy Saturday as on a quiet Tuesday.

Set aside when your server is madeThe full amount of your plan is reserved the moment the server is created, not when it gets busy.

Never lent to anyone elseAnother customer’s server can’t use your memory, and yours can’t use theirs.

No room means no roomAbout 105 GB of each 128 GB machine is sold; the rest runs the system. If we can’t fit a plan in the UK, HQ says “No room right now” rather than squeeze another server in, and we add capacity.

Processor time and disk

Every plan has a guaranteed share of the processor, and can burst higher when the machine is quiet. A Rust Friends server, for example, has a guaranteed share of 1 CPU thread and bursts up to 4 threads when the machine is quiet.

Threads that are always yoursEach plan has a guaranteed share: 1 thread for every 8 GB of memory, and at least a quarter of a thread. Other servers can’t take it, even on a busy night.

Bursts when the machine is quietEach game can burst up to 2 to 8 threads using idle processor time. Bursts aren’t guaranteed, so we never sell them as cores.

Extra burst, £2.99 a monthAdds 2 threads to how far your server can burst. It uses idle time only.

Disk space on every planEach plan has its own NVMe disk allowance, shown on the price list. Saved setups (up to 3 per server) share it. HQ warns you at 80% and 95% full.

Full disk, saved worldAt 100% HQ saves your world and stops the server cleanly, so nothing is corrupted. Free some space or add 25 GB for £1.99 a month, then start it again.

A thread, explainedA thread is half of a processor core. In HQ’s graph, 100% is one thread.

DDoS filtering, before traffic reaches you

Every server in the UK sits behind always-on network DDoS protection: attack traffic is filtered in the data centre’s network, before it reaches your server. Most attacks pass without players noticing, but no filter stops everything, and a big attack can still cause lag or drop players.

Always onThe network filtering runs all the time, not only after an attack is spotted.

Included on every planThere is nothing to buy or switch on.

Small floods stopped close to your serverWe also limit how many status queries and new connections one address can send to your server, so a single noisy source can’t swamp it.

Credit if your server can’t be reachedIf our checks find your server couldn’t be reached during an attack, the outage credit in our refund policy applies. If your players couldn’t join, open a ticket and a person checks.
